The Department of Economics has a first-class reputation for teaching and research quality, as should be expected in top-ranked University anywhere in the world. The department is one the leading departments in Nigeria and has a very high international reputation. Her strength lies in the field of economic theories and econometrics.
Established in 1991, the department began with a Bachelors Degree (B.Sc) programme in Economics and later introduced Postgraduate programme.
The academic programmes of the department are structured to conform to the National Universities Commission (NUC MAS) in all respects.
Our undergraduate programme provide training for students who may want to further their academic career in Economics or may want to be professionals in public or private sectors of the economy.

The Department of Economics has successfully provided Postgraduate training for over 7 years. The department started a Postgraduate Diploma programme in a specialized are of Banking and Finance which has been subjected to continuous development.
The M.Sc and M.Phil/Ph.D programmes in the year 2003/2004 academic session. The programmes which are taught by acdemic staff who are highly research-active, have made our PG degrees to become among the most successful in the Nigerian universities. The extensive M.Sc and M.Phil programmes enable students to undertake higher research in a wide range of subject areas in economics. The M.Sc programme provide students with an advanced training in core areas, which also enable them to specialize according to their interests.

Postgraduate Diploma in Banking & Finance
The programme prepares students who lack relevant/required specialist undergraduate preparation for entry to a master's programme.
